Some fans of Below Deck Down Under were uncomfortable with the way Captain Jason was convinced to wear Budgie Smugglers despite expressing his discomfort.
Earlier in Below Deck Down Under, Aesha begged Captain Jason to dress up as a doll smuggler along with the rest of the male staff on the Northern Sun. According to the crew, Budgie smugglers are an important part of Australian culture/humor. (Just ask Harry, who boarded the train with several pairs of his own.)
Although the captain didn’t seem to like wearing a speedometer, he and the rest of the male staff dressed up as doll smugglers for an event on the yacht. While the incident is said to be humorous and fun, some Below Deck Down Under fans are annoyed with the scene.
According to some fans of the Bravo series, it’s not okay to force the Captain to wear something he doesn’t feel comfortable with.
Below Deck Down Under fans are divided over the Northern Sun “doll smugglers” incident
So far, Season 2 of Below Deck Down Under has taken great measures to ensure the cast is as safe and comfortable as possible. The cast and crew immediately terminated Laura and Luke’s contracts following separate incidents of sexual misconduct.
However, according to fans, the cast has yet to reveal the doll smuggling scene in which Aesha begs Jason to wear a speedometer even though the prospect appears to leave him in distress.
“That scene was made for fun but it made me uncomfortable – even before Captain Jason expressed he didn’t want to do it,” one fan wrote on the Below Deck Down Under subreddit. “But the ‘anything for guests’ yachting culture forced him to wear that Budgie Smuggler, even if it personally embarrassed and upset him.”
They added, “Pretty gross, IMO – and ironic, since Jason is very stickler for boundaries and has zero tolerance for crew sexual harassment (Laura) and sexual assault (Luke) .”
However, another fan countered this by addressing the power imbalance and context of the incident which they believed was a factor. “The context is very different,” they wrote. “Men are in a position of more power in the world, across the board, (on average paid more, on average stronger and physically dominant), so they have more wiggle room than to agree to something like this as a joke, without any sleaze.”
They added: “Of course, this is just a slight simplification. Men can also be sexually harassed and of course feel uncomfortable. But the reality is that someone like the Captain in particular could easily say no if he wanted to. Separately, it seems like a double standard, but the dynamics are more complex when it comes to play, which means that fewer people will find Budgies Brunch unacceptable.”
