Rainfall at Burning Man 2023 turned the playground into mud, leaving festivalgoers stranded while organizers warned to save food and water.
The Black Rock Desert’s annual temporary city has been closed after predicted rainfall turned Burning Man 2023 into a “clay pot”.
Organizers warned that “no driving will be allowed until the surface of the playa dries”, with tens of thousands of people “encouraged to conserve food, water and fuel and take shelter in a warm space Pressure, safety”.
Currently, concertgoers are faced with limited resources, alkaline mud and unreliable phone service while waiting for much-needed sunshine. Together embodying the spirit of the festival, videos that are not often shared on TikTok provide insight into what life on playa looks like.
With the festival scheduled to run from August 27 to September 4, supply is starting to dry up. Many of the festival’s events have also been canceled due to the weather – including the iconic man’s burning – and portable toilets are no longer in use.
Another concern is that the mud turns into dust which is alkaline and can cause chemical burns. “Playa feet,” while not serious, is uncomfortable and is caused by contact with the desert floor. With the ground now soggy and many people attempting to traverse the plains barefoot, there are fears that the number of playa foot cases could be about to spike.
However, campers helped each other and one attendee told the BBC that “the party went on, everything went on as usual”.
Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the weekend and there’s no telling how long Burning Man will remain stuck in limbo.
There have been rumors of National Guard involvement, although these have not been confirmed.
