Ethan Hawke is “not interested” in directing his daughter’s sex scene in his upcoming movie

Ethan Hawke has revealed that he “couldn’t care less” about directing his daughter Maya’s sex scenes in upcoming film Wildcat.

Uma Thurman and Hawke were married from 1998 to 2005 and have two children together – Maya and Levon. Stranger Things fans may recognize Maya as Robin in the hit Netflix series, following in her parents’ acting footsteps.

When not investigating the mysteries of Hawkins, Indiana, Maya plays American novelist Flannery O’Connor in Wildcat. The biopic was also directed and co-written by her father with Shelby Gaines.

Ethan recently discussed what it was like directing sex scenes in a movie featuring his daughter and how it wasn’t what people expected.

In an interview with Variety, Hawke revealed that it was not a matter of appearing during Maya’s intimate scenes. “We very comfortable with it. I couldn’t care less,” Ethan said.

“We make sure to have an intimate coordinator ready to assist them. So that they feel safe, comfortable, and not like they’re being watched,” Maya commented about her co-stars. “…by some creepy dad,” Ethan added.

In addition to Hawke, Wildcat also stars Laura Linney, Philip Ettinger and Rafael Casal among other actors.

“Before we started…everyone asked me, ‘Are you nervous working with your dad?’ I didn’t think so,” Maya revealed. The Stranger Things star later called her father a “great teacher” who she loved working with on movies.

“I started thinking, ‘What don’t I see? What am I missing?’” he shared. “But this is our safe place.”

The world premiere of Wildcat was held at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2023. The film will screen at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.
