Park Slope, Brooklyn, is where she grew up and she attended Fort Hamilton High School. She studied at Lehman College of the City University of New York and received her bachelor’s degree in 1981. She majored in liberal arts with an emphasis in social work.

She then earned her J.D. from Howard University School of Law in Washington, DC. She practiced law in New York State in 1989. In 2013, James earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Columbia School of Public and International Affairs.

She founded the Urban Network, a coalition of African American professional organizations. It aims to provide scholarships to young people. She also served as a public defender for the Legal Aid Society.

Previously, she served on New York Governor Mario Cuomo’s Task Force. Its agenda is to have diversity in the judiciary. She served as an advisor to Albert Vann, Chief of Staff. Back in 1999, she was appointed as the first Assistant Attorney General. She was assigned to be in charge of the Brooklyn regional office. While in that position, James worked in many capacities but focused primarily on consumer complaints related to loan sharking and other illegal business practices.

She was sworn in as attorney general on January 1, 2019. She succeeded Barbara Underwood, who was appointed following the retirement of Eric Schneiderman. In a television program, in August 2020, she announced a state civil lawsuit. It was registered in the New York Supreme Court against the National Rifle Association (NRA). Four NRA department administrators were named as co-defendants. The NRA has registered a countersuit against James, citing statements she made throughout her 2018 campaign.
