American tattoo artist, former Miami Ink actor and current Ink Master judge, Chris Nunez has had a storied career in tattoo art. The artist and businessman from Florida has built a nearly 30-year career through hard work and talent.

Original Life: Graffiti and Brazil

Nuñez was born in Miami of French and Cuban descent. He entered the tattoo industry after becoming a famous graffiti artist in his teens. His first tattoo was the names of his parents. His father died when Chris was only 18 years old, which had a profound effect on his art and career.

According to his employer, Paramount Network, at age 21: “Nuñez packed his bags for a short trip to Brazil and ended up staying there for five years. He then traveled around Europe for three years, which enabled him to work with his favorite tattoo artists. This experience broadened both his artistic sense and his knowledge of tattooing.”

Upon returning to South Florida, Nuñez learned the art of tattooing and began his inking career in earnest.

From Miami Ink to Ink Master

Nuñez first gained television fame starring on TLC’s reality show Miami Ink, which ran for six seasons. The show — which details the tattoo adventures of artists and the people who get them — helped launch Nunez, Kat Von D and Ami James, among others, into the world of TV personalities.

In 2012, Nuñez served as a judge on Spike Network’s reality competition Ink Master, where he joined Kat Von D’s ex-husband Oliver Peck and Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro as hosts. programme.

Ink Master on Spike features tattoo artists competing in a variety of challenges to measure specific tattoos and related artistic skills, with tattoo volunteers called canvases of human. “…my favorite thing to do is just sit down and get a tattoo. It’s the least stressful thing I can do in my life. If I sit down and work I’m happier than a pig sitting in shit. If I kept spinning my wheels, chasing this and that, doing things for other people, it would be terrible.”

From 2013-2018 Nuñez owned and operated Handcrafted Tattoo and Art Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was motivated to open a mom-and-pop shop as a way to further the career of the tattoo community as a mainstream art form and not just a craft of ink on the skin.

“I think tattooing has become an almost Renaissance art form. You have a lot of crossover artists; you have a lot of graffiti artists who have become tattoo artists, you have sign painting, classical painting, pop artists, all these different types of art.”

“Even fashion, clothes – it’s all a fuse. A lot of people have found inspiration in tattoos and are inspired by tattooists for their personal artwork.”

Nuñez and Miami Ink alumnus Ami James opened Love Hate Tattoos on Miami Beach, however Nunez is no longer involved in the business.

He also worked on the project The Tattoo Shop alongside artists and television personalities James, Darren Brass (Miami Ink), Tommy Montoya (NY Ink) and Chris Garver (NY Ink, Miami Ink)

Nuñez is a partner in Ridgeline Empire, a content and media conglomerate that operates the Ink Skins and Upset Gentlemen subsidiaries and an animation studio with two animated series Hoodbrats and Toothians.

Currently, Nunez is focusing on philanthropy surrounding his love of the Amazon rainforest. He is raising funds on behalf of Benki Piyãko and the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute for Earth Day.
